200 Essential Tamil Words – Part 7: Vaa (Come)

Welcome! I’m Meenakshi, your guide to Colloquial Tamil.

In this lesson, we continue the verbs section of our “200 Essential Tamil Words” series with an essential verb: “Vaa” (வா) – meaning “come.”

This verb is used frequently in daily conversations and is key to expressing movement towards a place or person.

Let’s explore how to use it in different tenses!

What Does “Vaa” (வா) Mean?

“Vaa” (வா) means “come” and is used when someone is moving toward the speaker or a particular location.

Like in English, Tamil also uses “Vaa” when inviting someone to come over.

For example, if you want to say “Come here!”, you would say:
👉 “Inge Vaa!” (இங்கே வா!)

💡 However, Tamil sometimes uses “Vaa” in situations where English speakers might say “go.”

For example:
“I will come to your house.”“Naan ungal veetukku varuven.” (நான் உங்கள் வீட்டுக்கு வருவேன்)

Even though the speaker is physically going away from their current location, Tamil still uses “Vaa” because the destination is the listener’s location.

This is similar to how English speakers say “I’ll come to your place later” instead of “I’ll go to your place later.”

Present Tense Examples

“I come home.”
👉 Naan Veetukku Vareen (நான் வீட்டுக்கு வருகிறேன்)

“You come home.”
👉 Neenga Veetukku Vareenga (நீங்கள் வீட்டுக்கு வருகிறீர்கள்)

“He/She comes home.”
👉 Avanga Veetukku Varaanga (அவர்கள் வீட்டுக்கு வருகிறார்கள்)

“We come home.”
👉 Namma Veetukku Varoome (நாம் வீட்டுக்கு வருகிறோம்)

Past Tense Examples

“I came home.”
👉 Naan Veetukku Vandeen (நான் வீட்டுக்கு வந்தேன்)

“You came home.”
👉 Neenga Veetukku Vandeenga (நீங்கள் வீட்டுக்கு வந்தீர்கள்)

“He/She came home.”
👉 Avanga Veetukku Vandaanga (அவர்கள் வீட்டுக்கு வந்தார்கள்)

“We came home.”
👉 Namma Veetukku Vandoom (நாம் வீட்டுக்கு வந்தோம்)

Future Tense Example

“I will come to your house now.”
👉 Inime Naan Ungal Veetukku Varuven (இனிமே நான் உங்கள் வீட்டுக்கு வருவேன்)

💡 Even though the speaker is physically going to another location, Tamil still uses “Vaa” because the focus is on the destination.
